A Bad Week for Databases

August 27th, 2008 · No Comments

Monday Night, I spent several hours downtown where we have some servers colocated. The plan was to transfer a fibre channel card to a new server and to move the production database to the Solid State Disk array on that server.

The card moved over nicely and even the database move went well.

Our websites that use the database were all up and responsive. And there were no unusual messages in the logs.

The next day (Tuesday), things continued to go well–I move the maintenance jobs over to the new server.

Then at high noon, we got the same errors that I had mentioned previously with the SSDs. And there was corruption detected.

So, I had to take the database down and restore it on the SAN (from the SAN, unfortunately). That took about 5 1/2 hours. The database is only 150GB, after all.

Then it took almost that long again to restore the hourly transaction log backups leading up to the failure.

Needless to say, it has been a bad week for databases–well, only the ones on the SSDs.

*sigh*

A Good Day for Fence Posts

August 23rd, 2008 · No Comments

Today, I set seven fence posts. That’s quite good–especially since the digging must be done by hand once rocks, clay and sand have been loosened up by the digging bar. I was going to harass the hornets that stung me, so I dressed up in extra layers of clothing, my motorcycle jacket and helmet–but it seems I had already destroyed that nest. All I found was a bit of paper in the ground from their lair. Pity.

More Fencing…and Ouch!

August 18th, 2008 · No Comments

I worked on the fence a lot over the weekend–and then, some hornet decided to sting me–behind the ear. It was near dusk, and I pitched the San Angelo Bar I was using to dig holes and raced up the hill and into the house to avoid a repeat of a childhood run-in with hornets.

I had to buy a new digging bar. Maybe I’ll take a picture of it. At the outset of the project, hefting the ~15 lb sucker was a bit of a challenge, but now I can swing it around with little effort.

So I bought several yellowjacket traps and have been getting my revenge by trapping. “Where was I? Oh yeah, the important thing is that I wore an onion on my belt, which was the custom at the time…”

Paying for Air

August 13th, 2008 · No Comments

For a number of days, my car had been telling me my tires were low. Knowing that proper tire inflation saves gasoline, prevents premature wear, and reduces the chance of catastrophic failure, I finally approached the pay air compressor at the gas station.

Paying for air…
